Camp Cookout | Turkey Sandwich
In this edition, we take you to a calm spring morning in late April, where the Toms didn’t exactly read the script. It doesn’t matter much, because at the end of the day, it all eats the same.
Daybreak had long passed, and the longbeards were henned up. A quick spur-of-the-moment decision to get eyes on the birds led to us rushing back to our original setup.
Moments later we heard a commotion in the field next to us and birds flying up into a big oak, no more than 150 yards straight behind and to the east.
Much to our surprise, a coyote popped out of the ditch beneath the bird-filled tree and started our way. That ol’ wily dog could tell something was wrong, and off he went.
The clock hadn’t passed 9 when, low and behold, two of the treed birds decided to pitch off in our direction; it wasn’t difficult to tell by the ropes swinging as they began to strut right onto our laps.
The rest is history, as they say, and there's no need to finish this story.
